I watched a French couple get turned away at the check-in desk in Paris last spring — not because of a lost passport, but because they'd booked a return ticket instead of an onward one.
That single booking mistake is, by a wide margin, the number one reason travellers miss out on China's most generous entry policy: 240-hour visa-free transit. It gives citizens of 55+ countries ten full days in China without a visa. Ten days is a real trip — enough for the Great Wall, a Chengdu food crawl, and Shanghai's night markets in one go.
But the rules are strict in ways that aren't obvious. Here is everything, in the order you'll actually need it.
What the policy actually says
Citizens of the eligible nationalities may enter China at designated ports and travel within a defined geographic zone for up to 240 hours (10 days) without a visa. Three conditions apply, and all three are checked:
- You must hold a confirmed onward ticket to a third country or region, departing from a Chinese port within 240 hours of entry.
- You must enter and exit through qualifying ports. Flying into a small regional airport that doesn't participate means you'll need a visa.
- You must stay inside your zone. This is enforced at hotel check-in and at exit immigration.
The mistake that catches almost everyone
London → Beijing → London does not qualify. Returning to your country of origin means you're not in transit to a third country. London → Beijing → Tokyo does. The onward ticket must be booked and confirmed before you land, and immigration may ask to see it.
Who qualifies
The list covers 55+ passport-issuing countries, including all EU/EEA member states, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, and most of the rest of the OECD. Holders of passports on China's separate 30-day visa-free list can also choose the 240-hour route if they prefer.
Practically speaking, this is the route that matters most for US and Canadian passport holders, who aren't on the 30-day list.
The four main zones
Where you land determines where you can go. The zones are drawn around actual travel destinations, so most itineraries fit inside one comfortably:
- Beijing – Tianjin – Hebei. The Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace, and Tianjin's historic waterfront.
- Shanghai – Jiangsu – Zhejiang. The Bund, the water towns of Zhouzhuang and Xitang, Hangzhou's West Lake, and Suzhou's classical gardens — a UNESCO site.
- Guangdong. Guangzhou's temple districts and dim sum culture, Shenzhen's art and tech scene, plus day trips to Zhuhai.
- Sichuan – Chongqing. The Giant Panda base, Sichuan cuisine, Chongqing's hillside hotpot, and side trips to Leshan.
Several cities also operate as standalone ports — Xi'an, Kunming, Qingdao, Dalian, Wuhan, Changsha, Guilin's province and others — but there your travel is limited to that city's administrative area.
Ten days, one zone, no visa. Plan it like a real trip, not a long layover — and you'll see more of China than most package tourists do in two weeks.
Police registration — don't skip it
Foreign visitors must register their address within 24 hours of arriving at each new address. Hotels do this automatically for you. If you're staying in a private apartment or with friends, you must register at the local police station yourself. It takes fifteen minutes and it's the difference between a clean exit and an awkward conversation at the airport.
Before you fly
Keep a printed or clearly-saved copy of your onward ticket. Set a calendar reminder for 240 hours from your entry stamp — the clock starts at the stamp, not at your hotel. And confirm your port and nationality on the National Immigration Administration site before booking, because both lists change.
